Who is Superman? - Kevin Truelson

“Superman Died” was the headline I woke up to this morning. Groggy and half dazed, I had to look again, and there it was “Superman Died”.

The first, and actually the only, thing that raced through my mind that early was, who is Superman? I know what you’re thinking: everybody knows who Superman is!! Tall, dark and handsome, dons a red cape, blue suit, big “S”
on his chest, can leap a tall building in a single bound, “The Man of Steel”, Clark Kent, Lois Lane, The Daily Planet… is any of this ringing a bell Kevin!!!
Don’t worry people, it all rings a bell, I may have a few screws loose but not that many.

They were talking about the real Superman, and the investigation of his death. This Superman walked among us as a mere immortal, thought to be invincible, even by me. He was sculpted, out of what seemed to be steel. Tall, dark and handsome. He was Clark Kent during the day but Superman when called upon. It seemed that not even kryptonite could slow him down. But not only was he slowed down, he was killed.

Along with being a superhero, he was a husband, a brother, and a son. He had the world in his hand but now lays to rest. He chose the road less traveled and knew the meaning of sacrifice and valor. He questioned conformity and challenged you to think. He won the lottery and gave the money back. There was something out there for him, and he was going to find it. He was a stand-up guy in a sit down world.

He wanted to live as Clark Kent, no cameras, no interviews, no special treatment, but his super powers couldn’t be hidden. He was anti-attention in a media driven world. But still, he was my hero, my Superman. The only problem was his “kryptonite”. Every superhero has their fatal flaw, their so-called kryptonite, and he was no different. And fearlessness was it.

Now you’re wondering, “Who is Superman?”. A five year old in Bakersfield, who loves hockey, may see Kevin St.Jacques as Superman. And why not? Kevin wears a mask, dons a 22 Condors cape, and can satisfy a thousand people a night with one flick of the wrist.

Superman could also be that single-mom who takes on two jobs just so her daughter can have the best. She runs around at a million miles an hour, does four things at once and delivers a smile to the little girls face at any cost, even though she’s struggling to make ends meet.

What about the firemen and policemen, putting themselves on the line everyday and everynight for people they don’t even know. The same can be said for all those serving in the military defending you, me and everyone else at all cost. And how about all those teachers and coaches, sacrificing long hours, social lives, and money without any appreciation and a whole lot of headaches.

All these people have their fatal flaws, their kryptonite, but all are Superman in their own way, it just depends on who’s looking at them. So who is Superman?

More random thoughts:
I wait for my laundry, and it’s never early…when you can see your veins through your shirt it’s time for the next size…I wish when someone asked me “how u doin?” they’d wait for the answer…sunburn update: still burning, shedding, and oozing…when I ask for a girl’s number they give me one, just not theirs…Laguana Beach is not reality…Koko looks disappointed when she realizes that it’s just me…fat free peanut butter is not peanut butter…if I came across a genie I’d be freaked out…when I’m bored I go to ask.com and type in “why”……Jamie Pressly is the one.

Well I hate to disappoint, but it’s almost time to walk the coffee cup, so recognize game, I’m a lay
mine down.
