Condors in the running for third straight Beautiful Bakersfield Award

Condors to reward children for reading during the summer

Condors nominated for Beautiful Bakersfield Award:

The Bakersfield Condors have been nominated for the Humanitarian Group of the Beautiful Bakersfield Awards, and are competing for their third consecutive such honor. The Condors, who won the award in 2000, 2006 and 2007, are one of seven organizations nominated.

Hosted by the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, the Beautiful Bakersfield Crystal Camellia Awards Banquet will be held at the Double Tree Hotel on Saturday, June 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. The awards banquet will be broadcast live on KGET TV-17 beginning at 7 p.m.

The Condors, who were recently voted as a Kern County Favorite in the Best of Kern County Readers Choice Poll, were nominated for the Beautiful Bakersfield Award thanks in part to the $433,000 donated in cash, goods and services during the 2007- 08 season, as well as the nearly 200 community appearances and fundraisers for local schools and nonprofit organizations.

Condors reward Summer Reading Program participants:

To encourage children to keep up their reading during the summer, the Bakersfield Condors have teamed up with the Kern County Library System to reward children through the Kids Summer Reading Program. Every child who reads 10 books from June 2 through July 26 will receive a voucher for admission to any Condors game in October.

Children can get a summer reading tracking sheet at any Kern County public library or download and print one from www.kerncountylibrary.org. Upon completion of each book, kids will need to fill out the tracking sheet and have a parent/guardian sign it. Participants who reach the goal of 10 books can return their tracking sheet to any Kern County library to receive their Condors voucher as well as a free paperback book courtesy of Friends of the Library.

This Week in Condorstown:

Thursday, June 4: Condors mascot Colonel Claw'd will make two appearances at the Sheriff's Activity League BBQ Fundraiser, one at noon and the other at 5 p.m. The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., will be held on the corner of 22nd and L street. The funds raised will benefit local youth programs. For more information call 391-7771.

Congratulations to Fit & Fun Essay and Drawing Contestants:

Congratulations to all the participants in the Fit & Fun Condors Essay and Drawing Contest. During the month of May, young Condors fans, ranging from preschool to 6th grade, were invited to write an essay or create a drawing to win a Condors youth jersey, valued at $100.

The purpose of the essay and drawing contest was to encourage youngsters to think about ways to stay active and healthy throughout the summer and spend quality time with their families. The participants submitted essays or drawings addressing the topics, "What activities am I going to do this summer to stay fit and healthy?" or "What fun activities am I going to do with my family during the summer?"
