Condors Capitalize on Power Play to Steamroll Reign
Man-advantage converts five times in 8-3 victory
Bakersfield, Calif. -
A crowd of 3,115 fans at Rabobank Arena had a lot to cheer about on
Wednesday night, as the Bakersfield Condors (4-2-0, 8pts) scored five
power play goals en route to an 8-3 victory over the Ontario Reign
(2-3-0, 4pts). G Timo Pielmeier (2-1-0) picked up the win, stopping 33
of 36 shots, helping the Condors kill 10 of 11 power plays against.
I
t was a wild game between two divisional foes, who met for the third time
in less than three weeks. The Condors and Reign played a tight first
two periods, before Bakersfield broke it open in the third with four
unanswered goals.
The Reign grabbed the early lead in the game by netting a tally on
their first shot of the evening. F Greg Hogeboom put home his 5th of
the season just 18 seconds in to make it 1-0. Bakersfield responded,
however, with three straight to take the advantage. LW Shawn Weller
redirected a point shot from D Sasha Pokulok at 5:27 to tie it up 1-1
on the power play. The Condors added another power play marker at
9:04, with RW Stephane Goulet wrapping around the netminder to tuck
home his first of the season. Less than two minutes later, F Andrew
Ianiero put home a loose puck on the doorstep to make it 3-1. Ontario
pulled within one at 13:15 with a power play goal of their own, and the
teams headed to the dressing room with the Condors nursing a 3-2
advantage.
Just 1:29 into the middle stanza, the Reign tied it up with
RW Jon Rheault scoring his third of the season, bringing the score
to 3-3. But just a few minutes later, D John de Gray netted his second
of the season to regain the lead and chase Ontario G Mike
Zacharias from the pipes in favor of G Chad Darling. Shots were 23-21
Ontario after two.
The Condors extended the lead in the third period, with four
goals, to pull away from the Reign. C MacGregor Sharp, (pictured,
above) deflected a D Stu Bickel shot for his third of the season to
make it 5-3. The Condors then scored three consecutive power play goals
to finish the game. Pokulok recorded his fourth of the season at 8:47
of the third period with a 5-on-3 power play goal. Weller scored his
second of the game with 3:10 to play in the game and D Eric Regan
finished the scoring with 2:53 remaining for an 8-3 score.
