Kaufman, 24, served as a captain at Robert Morris University (College Hockey America), located in Pittsburgh, Penn., in each of his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He recently completed his college career with 50 points in 118 games, coupled with 98 penalty minutes, finishing first or second among defensemen on his team in scoring all four years with the Colonials. Kaufman was named to the CHA All-Rookie Team his freshman season and was tabbed for the CHA All-Academic Team his senior year.

"(Director of Hockey Operations) Bob Bartlett recently saw him play at a tournament and was impressed with his skating," said Raymond. "Chris also came highly recommended by other coaches and NHL personnel."

The 6-foot-2-inch, 200-pound Gig Harbor, Wash. native won a high school state championship in 1999. Prior to RMU, Kaufman also played junior hockey with the Helena Bighorns in the North American Hockey League, where he was a Second-Team All-NAHL in 2004.
