Boyd extends goal-scoring streak, but Condors falter late in 4-2 loss

LAS VEGAS – F Peter Boyd and F Brett Perlini staked the Bakersfield Condors (13-30-2-2, 30pts) to a 2-0 lead after one period of play, but the Las Vegas Wranglers (19-19-2-3, 43pts) scored three third period goals en route to a 4-2 come-from-behind victory on Wednesday night at Orleans Arena.

Boyd continued his torrid stretch of play, extending his goal-scoring streak to six games in a row, with a wraparound tally on the power play at the 10:49 mark of the first period to give the Condors a 1-0 lead. The goal was his 16th of the season and was assisted by F Francis Verreault and F Evan Trupp. The Condors extended their lead to 2-0 when F Brett Perlini finished off a feed from F Nicholas Tremblay from in tight at 17:43. Bakersfield outshot Las Vegas, 12-7.
F Brett Lyon earned his 13th fighting major of the season, his eighth in a Condors sweater, with a bout at 4:37 against F Adam Huxley after the two had just left the penalty boxes for roughing minors. The Wranglers would score moments later at 5:48 when D Jamie Fritsch’s shot from the slot snuck through traffic and past Condors G Brian Stewart who never found the shot through the bodies in front. The goal would be the lone tally of the frame as Stewart took over from there making 15 stops, including a highlight-reel diving stick save on Wranglers F Chris Francis. Shots favored Las Vegas, 16-9.

Las Vegas controlled the third period and tied the game, 2-2, at 12:35 when D Charlie Cook’s shot from the blue line found the back  of the net. F Robbie Smith scored the eventual game-winner on stuff shot underneath Stewart with 2:30 remaining in regulation to put the Wranglers in front for good at 3-2. Bakersfield got a late power play and pulled Stewart for the extra attacker, but D Mike Madill sent one from 200 feet into the empty net to cap the scoring and give Las Vegas a 4-2 win.
