Oilers get #1 Pick, Barons take on Rampage..

CONDORSTOWN, Calif.  The Bakersfield Condors, owned by the Edmonton Oilers, are set for the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2015-16. Every week in the offseason, the team will give you a “What you need to know” synopsis around the world of hockey.
1. OILERS DEFY THE ODDS AND GET #1 PICK IN NHL DRAFT

  • The Edmonton Oilers had just an 11.5% chance of securing the top overall pick in the 2015NHL Entry Draft on Saturday, but that is exactly what happened when NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Dalystepped to the podium.
  • According to the NHL Central Scouting Service, 18-year old Connor McDavid, who currently plays in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), is slotted as the top pick.
  • Oilers Assistant General Manager Bill Scott had some lucky socks that helped secure the top pick
  • McDavid and the Erie Otters play Edmonton’s 2013 top draft pick D Darnell Nurse and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the OHL’s Western Conference Finals. Game One is Thursday.
2. AHL PLAYOFFS: BARONS RELOADED; HERSHEY SET FOR WORCESTER

  • The #6 Oklahoma City Barons begin their best-of-five first round series with the #3 San Antonio Rampage on Thursday in Oklahoma City. Games 1 & 2 are in Oklahoma City before the series moves to San Antonio for the remainder.
  • With the NHL season over for the Oilers, the Barons received LW Curtis Hamilton along with d-men David Musil, Brandon Davidson, and Martin Marincin back to help for the playoff run.
  • In the Eastern Conference, former Condors Head Coach Troy Mann, assistant coach Ryan Murphy, D Erik Burgdoerfer, C Joel Broda and the Hershey Bears are the #2 seed and take on the #7 Worcester Sharks beginning on Friday.
3. AFFILIATION CHANGES IN THE AHL – WHO’S GOING WHERE?

  • There was quite the shuffle in the past week as multiple AHL teams swapped NHL affiliations.
  • Including the five teams starting play in the Pacific Division in 2015-16, 11 NHL teams have either changed affiliations or cities in the past four months

6. STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS KEEP ROLLING ON

  • Four games on tonight and four more on tap for tomorrow night. Games are on NBCSN and USA beginning at 4 p.m.
  • The Anaheim Ducks, California’s lone representative in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, look to close out their series in Winnipeg tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. on USA. The Ducks lead the series, three games to none.
