Reply: If a team is down to one available goalie on their roster, for injury, suspension, bereavement leave, or anything else, they are allowed to sign an emergency back-up goaltender. This person is only permitted to play in a game should something happen to the regular goaltender.

The “EBUG” (as it is referred to, for short) is pretty common in a league that has a lot of player movement up and down from other leagues, and that has a salary cap. Teams typically cannot keep three goalies around for very long and have all three of them remain on the roster, and if a team knows they will be down to just one goalie for a short amount of time, it eliminates the need to go out and recruit another goalie, bring him into town, put him on the salary cap, etc.

Wednesday’s game against Victoria was unique in that both the Condors and the Salmon Kings used an emergency back-up. And both were from Bakersfield as well (Tim Potter and Manny Martinez).
