The Edmonton Oilers have signed d-man Markus Niemelainen to a two-year contract extension with an average annual value (AAV) of $762K. The first year of the contract is a two-way contract, while the second year is a one-way contract.
Niemelainen, 23, has appeared in 20 games with the Oilers this season, posting one assist, four penalty minutes and a -5 plus/minus rating. He played his first NHL game on December 1, 2021 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The 6’6”, 190-pound d-man has also played in 23 games with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Bakersfield Condors this season, posting seven points (2G, 5A), eight penalty minutes and a +6 plus/minus rating.
The Kuopio, Finland native has recorded 13 points (4G, 9A), 14 penalty minutes and a +6 plus/minus rating in 44 career AHL games.
Niemelainen was selected by Edmonton in the third round, 63 overall in the 2016 NHL Draft.
