Condors fall on wrong end of wild shootout in Stockton, 9-6

STOCKTON, Calif. – In a game which featured nine goals scored combined in the second period, the Bakersfield Condors (5-16-3-0, 13pts) fell to the Stockton Thunder (12-8-1-2, 27pts) at Stockton Arena on Saturday night.
Stockton rattled off the first two goals of the game with F Jordan Fulton scoring at the 4:18 mark of the first period and F Matt Foy blasting a power-play goal past Condors G Bryan Pitton at 11:43 to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead. The Condors responded with a great tandem effort from F Peter Boyd and F Ian McKenzie which resulted in McKenzie scoring his second of the season off a rebounded Boyd shot at the 16:03 mark of the period. It was McKenzie’s second goal of the season and cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Shots were 16-15 in favor of Bakersfield. Nine combined goals highlighted the second period. The Thunder increased their lead to 4-1 with goals from F Kevin Baker and F Garet Hunt just 19 seconds apart at the beginning of the second period. Bakersfield made it 4-2 when F Robby Dee scored shorthanded, 6:29 into the period. F Bretton Cameron and F Ian O’Connor responded with two more goals for Stockton to increase the Thunder lead to 6-2 at the 8:04 mark. The Condors pulled to within three when F Scott Freeman scored shorthanded at 10:23 to cut the lead to 6-3. Baker scored his second of the period two minutes later to make it 7-3 Stockton.
The Condors refused to go into the intermission quietly though as they scored twice. The first from Jesse Gimblett, his sixth of the season, on the power play at 13:16 and the second from Freeman at 16:37 to make the score 7-5 after two periods of play. The Thunder scored quickly in the third period with Mike Little tallying at 1:56 of the period to make it 8-5 Stockton. Mathew Sisca pulled one back at 5:24 to cut the deficit to two at 8-6, but it would be as close as the Condors would get the rest of the night. Baker completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal and gave the Thunder the victory, 9-6. Tempers flared at the end of the game, leading to multiple fights and one extended line brawl involving four players for each side.
Condors Droppings: Condors Head Coach Matt O’Dette returned to Stockton for the first time during the regular season…F Ian McKenzie’s goal snapped a 16-game personal goal-scoring drought…G Bryan Pitton was pulled after allowing the sixth goal at the 8:24 mark of the second period…G Matt Keetley replaced him in net and took the loss, allowing 2 goals on 14 shots…The nine goals surrendered is the most by the Condors since allowing 11 on March 30, 1999…The 15 combined goals tied a Condors single-game record…F Parker Stanfield recorded his first professional fight in the third period…The Condors are now winless in their last 12 games (0-10-2)…Scratched for the game tonight were F Chris Kushneriuk (inj.), D Joe Loprieno (inj.), F Michael Gergen (inj.), and F Tyler Helfrich (healthy)…Final Shots: BAK – 34; STK – 39… Power plays: BAK-1/3; STK-3/7… Three stars: 1.
