Condors comeback falls short against Utah, 6-4

Oct. 23, 2010

West Valley City, UTAH – The Utah Grizzlies (2-1-1-0, 5pts) scored four power play goals and held off a comeback from the Bakersfield Condors (1-2-0-0, 2pts) to take a 6-4 victory in front of 5,051 fans at Maverik Center Saturday night.

Bakersfield drew first blood on the night, with F Andrew Ianiero blasting home his first of the season at 10:46 to give the Condors their third 1-0 lead in three games this season. But former NHL blueliner Ric Jackman scored back-to-back power play goals less than four minutes apart to take the 2-1 lead into the first intermission. The Grizzlies started G J.P. Lamoureux between the pipes, while the Condors came back with G Josh Tordjman.

The Grizzlies controlled most of the second period, as Utah went on five consecutive man advantages in the middle frame, and extended the lead with two more power play goals. LW Brad Snetsinger and F Brent Gauvreau tallied to make it 4-1 Utah. But the Condors battled back with two late tallies. C J.P. Chabot scored his first at 17:40 and D Joey Ryan also notched his first, on the power play, at 18:51 to rally back to a one-goal deficit. Shots were 17-9 in the period.

In a back-and-forth third period the Condors tied the game up. Rookie C Carter Smith erased the Grizzlies lead with his first career goal at 2:23. But Utah regained the advantage with C Hugo Carpentier’s third of the season at 11:14. They added an empty net tally in the closing seconds to seal the win.

Notes from the Nest:
RW J.D. Corbin (injury) and C Rylan Kaip (returned to Bakersfield for the birth of his child) each missed tonight’s game, as the Condors skated with just 15 players and two goalies… Smith became the first Condor of the season to record his first career goal tonight… Power plays: BAK-1/3, UT-4/8… Three stars: 1. Jackman (UT); 2. Carpentier (UT); 3. Snetsinger (UT).
