CONDORS SET HOCKEY OPS STAFF

CONDORSTOWN, Calif. – The Bakersfield Condors announced today that the team has hired Derik Johnson as a video coordinator and Alec James as an assistant equipment manager. They both join the hockey operations staff below for the 2017-18 season.

Johnson, 27, joins the organization after playing professionally with Springfield (AHL), Reading (ECHL), and Missouri (ECHL). He played his college hockey at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He will assist the coaching staff with video breakdown and analysis.

James graduated in 2015 from California Lutheran University with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Advertising, and Applied Communication. He served the past two seasons as a visiting team locker room supervisor for the Ontario Reign and previously served as an assistant equipment manager with the ECHL Reign. He replaces Nick Lazor who accepted a position with UMass-Lowell as their equipment manager.
GERRY FLEMING (stats)
  • Fleming enters his third full season as head coach of the Edmonton Oilers top development team having taken over the head coaching duties in December 2014 in Oklahoma City prior to the organization moving to Bakersfield for the 2015-16 season
  • Has compiled a record of 90-78-19 (.532) in his two-plus seasons as an AHL head coach
  • Won his 400th game as a head coach on Feb. 28, 2017 against Texas
  • Joined the Oilers organization in 2008-09 as an assistant with their former AHL affiliate in Springfield and in nine seasons has served as both an assistant coach in Springfield/Oklahoma City and a head coach in Oklahoma City/Bakersfield
  • Instrumental in the development of Oilers prospects with 23 players having played in both Edmonton and Bakersfield over the past two seasons
  • Former Condors accounted for 28 points (12g-16a) during the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs including four of the Oilers seven game-winning goals

  • Third season as assistant coach under Fleming
  • Previously spent one season as head coach of the ECHL Bakersfield Condors (2014-15)
  • Compiled four consecutive 40-win seasons as head coach of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada (QMJHL)
  • Has served as a head or assistant coach for the past 13 seasons in NCAA, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, ECHL and AHL
TONY BORGFORD

  • Enters his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Oilers AHL team after joining the organization in 2014-15 in Oklahoma City
  • Served as a video coordinator/coach for 11 seasons with the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets (including eight seasons when the team was in Atlanta)
RETURNING HOCKEY OPERATIONS STAFF

  • The rest of the hockey operations staff include:
    • Alan Oman, head equipment manager – sixth season with the organization and third in his current position; a native of Florida
    • Josh Bennett, MS, ATC, head athletic trainer – fifth season with the organization; holds a Master’s degree in Sport and Fitness Administration from Winthrop University; a native of Maine
    • Patrick Love, strength and conditioning coach – fourth season with the organization; holds a Master’s degree in Wellness Management – Exercise Science from the University of Central Oklahoma; a native of Texas
