Grizzlies edge the Condors, 4-3

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah –  The Bakersfield Condors (2-2-0, 4 pts) suffered a one-goal loss for the second straight game against the Utah Grizzlies (3-1-0, 6 pts), 4-3 Friday night at Maverik Center.

The two clubs exchanged tallies early in the contest but Utah came out of the first with a 2-1 lead. Utah scored on the man advantage 4:16 into the game, but just 27 seconds later F Peter Boyd answered with an unassisted tally (his second of the season). LW Jeff LoVecchio regained the advantage for the Grizzlies in the final minute of the frame. Utah led in shots 13-4.

Shots were even at 10-10 in the middle stanza, but neither team could light the lamp. Condors G Matt Keetley and Grizzlies G Shane Owen kept the score 2-1 heading into the second intermission.

Goals were more plentiful in the third, as Utah made it a 3-1 lead with C Mitch Fadden’s power play marker in the opening minutes. The Condors countered with LW Ian McKenzie’s first of the season at 4:19, only to once again surrender a Utah tally just 1:28 later. Trailing 4-2 midway through the third, D Erik Burgdoerfer snapped a wrister home from the high slot to cut the deficit again. The Condors had a late power play and pulled the goalie in the final minute, but couldn’t get the equalizer.

Condors Droppings:
After the Condors scored the first goal in their two preseason games and first two regular season games, the Grizzlies scored first in both games in Utah… Bakersfield had a goal disallowed in the second period for a play in which the whistle had already blown… Power plays: BAK – 0/3; UTA – 2/7… Three Stars: 1. Donovan (UTA), 2. LoVecchio (UTA), 3. Turnbull (UTA).
